The project was assigned to us to refresh the visual identity of the Metropolia Media Exchange website. The goal was to create a modern and visually engaging platform that simplifies navigation while ensuring all essential information for exchange students is easy to access and user-friendly.
Research and Competitive Analysis
We began by conducting a thorough competitive analysis, examining other universities’ exchange websites and platforms emphasizing Finnish culture. The goal was to understand how similar sites deliver information and integrate cultural elements.
The findings from our research highlighted the need for a website that:
1.Is easy to navigate.
2.Avoids an overwhelming amount of information.
3.Strikes a balance between functionality and visual appeal.
Design and Development
As the UI/UX designer, I was responsible for creating wireframes and layouts for the website, focusing on making the platform simple, user-friendly, and engaging. The design aimed to reduce cognitive load and provide users with a seamless experience. Finnish cultural elements, such as landscapes and traditions, were incorporated to highlight the unique heritage Finland offers to exchange students.
The website delivered key information—ranging from program details to insights about Finnish culture and local attractions—in a visually appealing and accessible way. Every design choice, from the color palette to font selections, was meticulously aligned with the theme of Finnishness. My work ensured that the visuals harmonized with the functionality, resulting in a seamless and enjoyable user experience.
What I learned
This project was my first experience working as a UI/UX designer, and it was an opportunity to apply design principles in a practical setting. Through research and hands-on work, I developed my skills in creating user-centric designs and learned the importance of balancing visual appeal with usability. By designing the website, I gained valuable experience in crafting clean and engaging interfaces that enhance the overall user experience.
